No Starbucks…no sugar…no cheese…for 30 days?! Am I crazy? Yes. I should actually call this “Whole 30 – Week one and done” because I am not doing the full 30 days. But whoa, whoa, whoa, don’t worry, I’m still pretty much following it…I just modified it a bit. I’m getting ahead of myself…let me rewind and start at square one.
SO. For the past two years, I have been trying to kick the sugar habit, eat healthier, cut out afternoon coffee, blah blah blah. And I couldn’t. I am not kidding when I say I’ve tried a million times. I almost never made it through day one. Sugar is my biggest battle and I truly believe that I am addicted to it. So here I am last Saturday night and I read something about Whole 30. For some reason I just decided on a whim that I was going to try it! I didn’t even research it very much…I just read a quick overview and started looking on Pinterest for Whole 30 recipe ideas. Crazy again? Yes. A little. But anyways, if you aren’t familiar with Whole 30…it’s basically where you only eat meat, vegetables, eggs, fruit and nuts for 30 days. After the 30 days you slowly add other things back in to your diet to see what negatively affects you. There are a lot of rules and specifications so if you are interested you should google it.
Anyways, last Monday rolled around and it was game time! And guess what? For seven days I ate nothing but meat, vegetables, eggs, fruit and nuts. AND IT WAS AMAZING!! So why aren’t you continuing it?! Hold on, I’m getting there!!
The first couple of days were tough and I was tired but I pushed through! Days 3-7 I felt pretty dang good. I had more energy (and was drinking less coffee), I wasn’t near as hungry, I never felt shaky or like I needed to eat right away, my mood had improved and I just all around felt better. I was also making good, healthy meals for my family and trying new recipes. PLUS, Grey started sleeping through the night. I have no idea if this has anything to do with it…but since I still breastfeed him I’m kind of thinking maybe it made an impact?
You guys, I don’t know how but I actually stuck to this for seven whole days! Nothing has ever worked this well for me before. It was incredible. I will admit, the weekend was hard! I am so used to our routine of eating out, getting Starbucks, having dessert, ordering pizza, etc. so on Friday I really wanted to cheat and I was very tempted…but unbelievably I stayed strong! And I am so proud of myself!!
So why am I stopping? I wouldn’t say that I’m completely stopping. I am still not eating any sugar, dairy or processed food…but I’m taking more of a paleo approach. I need more choices! Plus, my mom is coming to visit on Thursday and I want to enjoy my time with her without worrying too much about my food.
So…moral of the story is that I am so glad I did Whole 30…err Whole 7 for a week because it has really helped! And I cannot believe that I haven’t had ANY sugar in 7 days. It’s mind blowing. I feel like it was the reset button that I so desperately needed. So if you are considering doing Whole 30, DO IT!! At least for a week!!
Here are some of the meals I ate during my week of Whole 30:
I’m definitely planning on continuing this journey of eating healthy, whole foods…so if this is something you’re interested in, I’ll keep posting updates! I’ll also share some meals and recipes on Snapchat so make sure you’re following me! (@kristamae12)
