We lived about three hours away from my parents at the time so we met them halfway at my grandparents house.
The fair was in town as well so we thought it would be a fun little day trip.
Kylie came with us too because we are the three best friends and we did everything together.
I miss those days!
Anyways, Kane was out working on a rig and drove home the night before our mini road trip.
He actually never went to sleep…he drove all night long and then we left when he got there in the morning so he had been up for quite some time.
He was basically running on adrenaline and energy drinks.
(Perhaps not a good combination when meeting your girlfriend’s family for the first time?)
We got to my grandparents house and Kane was so nervous.
He probably won’t admit that to you but both Kylie and I agree he was a little bit on edge.
I introduced him to my parents and all went fairly well. Kane and my dad are both really good at talking to people so conversation between them was pretty effortless.
When we were done with our hellos and small talk, we decided to go get a coffee.
The town my grandparents (and now my parents) live in has the best coffee shop and I always look forward to it every time I’m there…so I was more than ready to go get a latte!
We walked out of the house in a line…Kane was in front, followed by me, Kylie and my mom.
Only Kane didn’t know that my mom was behind us.
We were only a few steps out the door when he said (without looking back),
“Your mom is f***ing hott!”
Without skipping a beat, my mom replied,
“Well, thank you!!”
What a way to make a first impression, right?
After that slightly awkward exchange, we continued on to get our coffee and then the three of us split from my parents and went to the fair.
So at this point, Kane has had no sleep, too many red bulls and now a coffee.
Obviously going to the fair was a brilliant idea.
We walked around for a little bit and then Kane decided we should probably get on at least one of the rides.
Kylie didn’t want to but I was like, “oooh fair rides with my boyfriend! soo much fun!” and we decided to get on Pharaoh’s Fury.
For those of you who don’t know, this ride is essentially a large boat that swings baaaaaaaack and forth over and over.
Once the ride was over, I looked at Kane and he didn’t look very well. He was a tink pale and seemed to be a little bit wobbly.
He quickly told us that he needed to use the restroom because he had to “pee”.
We were no fools…we knew that he was in there puking his guts out.
He came out of the bathroom about ten minutes later and just looked awful!
We relentlessly teased him that a silly carnival ride made him sick and he kept trying to come up with so many dumb excuses!
I’m sure it goes without saying that Pharaoh’s Fury was the one and only ride we went on that day.
We got back to the house and it was time for Kane to meet my Grandma Alta.
She can be a pretty tough critic so I was really interested to see what she was going to think of him.
You could just tell that Kane wasn’t feeling good and I thought to myself, “Oh great, everyone is going to think he’s hungover!”
We walked up to the house and Kane was so close to puking again…but he held it together while I introduced him to my Grandma.
Being the gentleman that he is, he insisted on giving her a hug and he simultaneously asked her where the bathroom was.
You guys, he was mere seconds away from throwing up all over the place!
He left to go to the bathroom and I thought for sure my Grandma was going to ask me what the hell I was doing with him…but guess what? She LOVES him!!!
It must be that farm boy charm he always talks about.
Introducing Kane to my family was eventful to say the least…but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way! We share this story often and every time we talk about it, we die laughing. My whole family fell in love with him that day and they still love him just as much!!
We didn’t take any pictures that day but here are a couple that were taken around that same time…
Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
I hope you are surrounded by love and chocolate…lots and lots of chocolate!
to be continued…
