She was happy to answer my questions and never even asked me what they were for!
Happy Birthday, Mom.
I love you!
1. Outside of family members, who inspires you the most?
I’m so inspired by so many people. Those people who face challenges and overcome them really motivate me. As far as certain people…my best friend Pam, Jillian Michaels and Barbara Parkening. My best friend because she puts her whole heart and soul into teaching. That makes me want to try harder to be a better teacher. Jillian Michaels inspires me to take care of myself…work out, eat right and have a positive outlook on life. Barbara Parkening was my first riding teacher and she put me on a lot of amazing horses. She inspires me because she never had to work a day in her life but she had an incredible work ethic. She really worked at her skills as a rider and a trainer and wouldn’t stop until she got it right.
2. How would your childhood friends describe you?
(Laughing…) Probably as the smelly kid! I always had animals and I’m pretty sure I never showered. But they would say I was shy and loved animals. I had goats, rabbits, sheep and I don’t know that I ever took a shower.
3. What is better about the world today than when you were growing up?
It’s so much easier to stay in contact with your friends and family now. Everything is just so much more convenient.
4. What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
5. If you could instantly have one new skill (i.e. foreign language, musical talent, public speaking, etc.), what would it be?
I’d like to be able to sing better because I love to sing and I sound like shit. What I hear in my head just doesn’t sound like what actually comes out of my mouth. Being able to sing like Whitney Houston would be nice.
(For the record…my mother has a beautiful voice and should really give herself more credit!)
6. When did you know you had found the one?
(Laughing…) When did I know? Oh my God…I still don’t know. I just found him one day and decided I’ve got to stick with him!
I knew a week and a half after we started dating. We were standing outside my parents house and I was leaning against the car. He had both of his hands on either side of me and our foreheads were touching. He said, “If it wasn’t so soon I would tell you that I love you…but I’ll tell you anyways.” That is the night that I knew.
7. When did you know you wanted to be a mom?
While I was dating your dad, I never really wanted to have children. Shortly after we got married I decided I wanted a family. Your cousin Daniel had just been born and I was around him a lot so I think that really helped me decide.
8. What was the hardest thing about being a mother? The most rewarding?
I never felt like I had enough time. It was hard finding time to be a good parent while working a full time job. The most rewarding was watching you grow from day to day. And just having my love reflected back to me…still to this day that is very cool.
9. If you could go back in time to any period in history, where would you go and why?
I’ve always thought I’d like to go back to medieval times but they didn’t even have indoor plumbing so I’d have to pick a time that was more comfortable. I also liked the pioneer days but again no indoor plumbing so I wouldn’t be a happy camper. (Clearly a lot has changed since those early years of no showering…) I would say the 50s. Everyone was just so happy…there was rock n roll and family values were very important.
10. Out of these questions…what would you ask your mother?
I would want to know when she knew she had found the one.
Well since I just so happen to know that lady very well…I decided to go ahead and ask her that question! Here is what my Granny said about finding the one. Dwayne needed a piano player to accompany him for a talent show. We were Juniors in HS. That was in the fall. After 4-5 weeks, I invited him to the Sadie Hawkins Dance (that was a girl ask boy dance). After that, our practices changed into dates. After Christmas, we started going steady. At HS graduation, we were both head over heels in love. So it was get married or separate. We chose the later. He went to the Navy and I went to college. So we dated 7 years off and on before we got married. I knew he was the one because of our shared love of music.
Thank you so much Mom (and Granny) for answering these questions!
I hope you have an amazing birthday because you definitely deserve it!!
