She was talking about a story that she had heard from her daughter’s teacher.
The teacher was talking about different animals and how they are good at different things.
For example…an eagle can fly incredibly well…but if you asked the eagle to run in a race, it would probably get dead last.
She went on to talk about why we expect certain things of ourselves and our children.
Why do we expect our kids to excel in every single subject…when maybe they are very talented writers?
Why do we expect ourselves to excel in cooking…when maybe we are really good at baking?
We constantly beat ourselves up about the things we aren’t good at.
And we are constantly comparing ourselves to everyone around us.
If only I could run as good as her.
If only I could cook as good as he does.
If only I could keep our house as clean as theirs.
It’s time to stop comparing ourselves.
It’s time to stop expecting to be good at everything.
Maybe you can’t run like she can…but what can you do?
Are you good at yoga?
Do you know your way around a weight room?
Are you an excellent swimmer?
Instead of focusing on what we can’t do, let’s start focusing on what we can do.
All of us have our own stories…our own talents…our own lives.
It’s time to start living them in our own way.
Follow our own paths.
My goal for this month is to stop worrying about what everyone else is doing better than me. I’m only going to worry about what I can do to live a happier and healthier life.
